January 2007 Rebate Report: Spotlight: Screwbase Lamps |
Products |
Not Just Residential ProductsSince the early 1990s, utilities have used both financial and in-kind incentives to accelerate the adoption of energy-efficient screwbase lamps in both residential and commercial settings. In the past, one of the most popular retrofits involved replacing an incandescent lamp with a selfballasted compact fluorescent lamp (CFL)—a low-cost, easyto-install and long-lived maneuver that could reduce energy use by 70% or more and reduce the heat of light to boot. From living rooms to hotel rooms, from boardrooms to boiler rooms, millions of Americans used utility rebates to install dozens of millions of CFLs, removing countless kW and kWh from the grid, and saving hundreds of millions of dollars in energy costs in the process. Due to advances in technology, the field of viable screwbase alternatives to incandescent now extends far beyond CFLs. For example, self-ballasted ceramic metal halide lamps rival CFLs in their energy savings per socket, but have operating characteristics (such as more precise beam control) that appeal to sectors where CFLs have been less widely accepted, such as retail track lighting. As the following examples demonstrate, utilities continue to expand their screwbase rebate programs beyond CFLs to keep pace with changes in technology and the needs of their customers.
